Scat singing is a technique where the singer improvises both melody and rhythm using the voice as an instrument. Many variables are possible, and this is further expanded when we include both male and female vocalists. Scat offers something similar to another instrument for music bands to experiment creatively with. Depending on your perspective, it can feel like either a male and/or a female sound. In contemporary times, boundaries between genders are being increasingly softened. Viewed this way, I think of the figure in my painting as more “female,” but if the painting is turned 180 degrees, it seems to become more “male.” When music flows, the audience is wowed! Jazz, Blues and Scat are in the groove.
